He received his education at Manchester and Lancaster universities. He has given talks about Wales at the North American Festival of Wales in Vancouver and Washington, as well as across Wales, and has presented academic papers in Paris, Thessaloniki, Charleston, and Seattle, as well as teaching in Milan and Reggio Emilia. He has given the Bemis Lecture and received a Helm Fellowship from the University of Indiana. Breverton has worked and consulted in over thirty countries and has been in various television documentaries about the Welsh, including one in Los Angeles. He is a full-time non-fiction writer who has written over fifty volumes and has received five Welsh Books Council 'Book of the Month' awards after a career in international business and academia.
He has given talks about Welsh heritage all around Wales, with a special interest in Welsh pirates and privateers like 'Black Bart' Roberts and Admiral Sir Henry Morgan. His A to Z of Wales and the Welsh was hailed as the first Welsh encyclopedia, and Archbishop Rowan Williams praised his The Book of Welsh Saints, saying, This book is a truly exceptional achievement: a collection of tradition, topography, and literary detective work that can have few equals. I've had a lot of fun looking through it and have found a lot of new lines to investigate... Breverton has done more for Welsh tourism than the Welsh Tourism Board, according to Richard Booth MBE (King Richard Coeur de Livre, the 'King of Hay.') His works have been published all over the world and translated into over twenty languages, ranging from Polish to Turkish to Chinese and Japanese.
Breverton played rugby until he was 38 years old, and his finest accomplishment is serving on the Llanybydder Rugby Football Club committee. Breverton's 100 Famous Welshmen (2001) was a Welsh Books Council Book of the Month, with praise for being a fascinating anthology with painstaking research. His second edition, published in 2006, was hailed as a true goldmine of a book and a gigantic treasure chest of data and figures that no Welsh book collector can neglect.
