On January 27, 1832, Charles Luthwidge Dodgson was born in Daresbury, England. He became a Church of England preacher and a mathematics lecturer at Christ Church College, Oxford. He wrote An Elementary Treatise on Determinants, Symbolic Logic, and other scientific treatises under his own name. Lewis Carroll, his pen name, is more well-known. He wrote Alice in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass under this identity.

He was also a pioneering photographer who photographed many young children, particularly females, with whom he appeared to empathize. On January 14, 1898, he passed away.
