Outstanding amongst the cars that raced at the Motor Course at Brooklands, principally in the 1920s, were the giant aero-engined "specials". The sight and sound of these fiery monsters roaring dangerously round the steeply banked outer circuit near Weybridge in Surrey, thrilled a generation. This book looks at this exciting era, telling stories of the record-breaking cars and the charismatic men who built and drove them. The cars range from the 1913 V12 Sunbeam through to the 1933 24-litre Napier-Railton in which John Cobb set the all-time Brooklands lap record.

Bill Boddy was editor of MotorSport from 1934 for some 50 years. He first went to Brooklands Track in 1927 and was with Brooklands Track & Air for two and half years from 1931. Bill wrote five books about it, the last going to three editions and now in new MRP history and he also wrote for aviation magazines. He was employed by MAP at Farnborough for the duration of WW2, on Air Publications, and is still a regular contributor to MotorSport as its founder editor.

John Bailie, the co-ordinator of this book, became fascinated by the history of Donington Park through his association with the Donington Grand Prix Collection, the world's largest collection of Grand Prix racing cars. The idea of re-presenting the original Motor Sport Book of Donington came about through conversations with Bill Boddy when John was creating an event at the Donington Collection to celebrate a Tazio Nuvolari anniversary. These on-the-spot reports create fabulous word pictures of Donington Park's pre-war car race meetings and it has been a privilege to work alongside Bill Boddy in this re-creation of his original work.
