Charles Lutwidge Dodgson, better known by his pen name Lewis
Carroll. Carroll was an English writer of children's fiction, notably Alice's
Adventures in Wonderland and its sequel Through the Looking-Glass . He was
noted for his facility at word play, logic, and fantasy. He was also a
mathematician, photographer, inventor and Anglican deacon. Dodgson was the eldest son and third child in a family of seven girls and four boys born to Frances Jane Lutwidge, the wife of the Rev. Charles Dodgson. He was born in the old parsonage at Daresbury. His father was perpetual curate there from 1827 until 1843, when he became rector of Croft in Yorkshire--a post he held for the rest of his life though later he also became archdeacon of Richmond and a canon of Ripon cathedral.
