All Creatures Great and Small by James Herriot

James Herriot's stories about his life as a vet in Yorkshire have charmed and delighted millions of readers in the twenty years since his first book If Only They Could Talk was published in 1972. All James Herriot's books, including two other omnibus editions, All Things Bright and Beautiful and All Things Wise and Wonderful , are available in Pan. All Creatures Great and Small is the first James Herriot omnibus and contains If Only They Could Talk and It Shouldn't Happen to a Vet together with James and Helen's courtship from Let Sleeping Vets Lie.
James Herriot, a pseudonym for James Alfred Wight, grew up in Glasgow and qualified as a veterinary surgeon at Glasgow Veterinary College. Shortly afterwards he took up a position as an assistant in a North Yorkshire practice where he remained, with the exception of his wartime service in the RAF, until his death in 1995. He wrote many books about Yorkshire country life, including some for children, but he is best known for his memoirs, which begin with If Only They Could Talk. The books were televised in the enormously popular series All Creatures Great and Small.
