American Gods by Neil Gaiman

The sun has burned through the Earth's atmosphere and cooked the planet. All life is gone, save for those underground during the event. Amond those surviving are a girl in a wheelchair, her brainiac attendant, and a boy with Down Syndrome. They head to their hometown of Marion, Massachusetts (USA) and meet up with four young boys in the ruins of a former school. When one of the boys finds a portable radio in basement rubble, the groups spins the dial and finds one station still broadcasting. Their is a single message - Please come to Rockport. And the group decides that they will travel across to state to reach that town, in hopes of finding the one parent still possibly alive. Along the way they meet a family who joins in their journey, and a brilliant scientist whose life had fallen to ruins long before the sun cooked the planet.
