He spent 35 years in the US Navy, US Coast Guard, and Department of Defense, as well as serving as an exchange engineer in the French Navy. Measure of the Earth: The Enlightenment Expedition That Changed the World and Ships and Science: The Origins of Naval Architecture in the Scientific Revolution, 1600-1800 are two of his books. In Virginia, he lives with his wife and their two sons.
