American Zion by Benjamin E Park
The first major history of Mormonism in a decade, drawing on newly available sources to reveal a profoundly divided faith that has nevertheless shaped the nation
"Park delves into Mormon history and lore to produce a picture of the institution as one that is both marginalized and marginalizing" -- The New Yorker
"…as Benjamin Park, the author of ‘American Zion’, a new history of Mormonism, argues… The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, as it is officially known, has long defined itself simultaneously as a product—-and an opponent—of America." -- The Economist
"Over 500 engaging pages [American Zion] chronicles this history of Mormonism in America... it is a single-volume history representative of the maturity of Mormonism as a religion and of Mormon studies as a field, accessible and relevant to outsiders as well as the faithful, making full and innovative use of a range of sources." -- Seth Perry - The Times Literary Supplement
