The Analects of Confucius (Royal Collector's Edition) (Annotated) (Case Laminate Hardcover with Jacket) by Confucius

The Analects of Confucius is a collection of teachings and sayings attributed to the Chinese philosopher Confucius and his disciples, compiled after his death. The text, structured as a series of dialogues and reflections, conveys Confucius's philosophy on morality, government, personal conduct, and the ideal qualities of a virtuous person. Through concise, memorable statements, The Analects presents a framework for ethical living that has profoundly influenced Chinese thought, emphasizing self-discipline, respect for tradition, and the cultivation of character as essential for personal and communal well-being.

The Analects of Confucius are a foundational text of Confucianism, shaping Chinese philosophy, ethics, and government for over two millennia. This collection of teachings emphasizes virtues such as morality, social harmony, and respect for tradition, profoundly influencing East Asian cultures and societies. The Analects served as a moral and educational guide for Chinese officials and scholars, underpinning the civil service examinations and governance models in imperial China. Its enduring values of self-cultivation, respect, and societal responsibility continue to impact global philosophy and ethical thought.

This case laminate collector's edition includes a Victorian inspired dust-jacket.

Confucius [551-479 BC], though of noble descent, was born in humble circumstances. He believed that politics is only an extension of morals, and spent ten years travelling through the various states of China spreading his ideas. When he realised that there was no way of converting the feudal rulers to his way of thinking he returned to Lu and spent the rest of his life there teaching his pupils. D.C Lau has held a number of professorships in the field of Chinese language and literature.

Arthur Waley (1889-1966) is highly regarded for his many translations of Chinese and Japanese literature.

Sarah Allan teaches classical Chinese and Chinese philosophy at Dartmouth College.
