Anarchy and Old Dogs by Colin Cotterill
When a blind, retired dentist is run down by a logging truck as he crosses the road to post a letter, Dr Siri Paiboun, official and only coroner of Laos, finds himself faced with his most explosive case yet. The dentist's mortal remains aren't nearly as intriguing as the letter in his pocket. Written in invisible ink and encrypted, the letter presents Dr Siri with an irresistible challenge. Enlisting the help of his old friend, Civilai, now a senior member of the Laos politburo; Nurse Dtui ('Fatty'); Phosy, a police officer; and Aunt Bpoo, a transvestite fortune-teller, Dr Siri soon finds himself on the trail of an international plot to overthrow the government of Laos.
Siri's greatest aspects are his charm, persistence and dry humour, qualities that also make Cotterill's first novel an unexpected pleasure - Guardian Fascinating background, engaging characters and witty dialogue - Sunday Telegraph Cotterill's novels have richer plots than Alexander McCall Smith's African detective stories, but the same comic charm - Sunday Times This is Cotterill's best book, with witty dialogue and engaging characters, especially the irrepressible Siri, who becomes more lovable with each appearanceThe combination of humour, social commentary and a clever mystery make this one of the most enjoyable books I've read all year - Sunday Telegraph. ...there is something wonderfully refreshing about the rough-and-ready policing described in Colin Cotterill's addictive series .Cotterill is a consistently funny writer, bringing a light touch even to scenes of violence and chunks of historical exposition but there is a dark edge to his humour - Daily Telegraph. Eccentric, colourful and unexpectedly charming any western reader besotted by Alexander McCall Smith and his heroine - and there are many - will be unable to pass up this beguiling series - Irish Examiner.
Colin Cotterill was born in London. He has taught in Australia, the USA and Japan and lived for many years in Laos where he worked for nongovernmental social service organizations. He now writes full-time and lives in Chiang Mai, Thailand.
