No matter which area Newton examines (e.g exegesis, theology, application, illustrations), he continues to lead the reader back to scripture, and away form other potential sources of competing authority. This is the great strength of the work. Newton wants to ground preachers in scripture, and scripture alone. His thoroughness is impressive as he exegetes text and audience, and his illustrations and life stories add colour to the landscape.
