The Art of Earth Architecture by Jean Dethier
A landmark publication that presents a world panorama of raw earth structures from ancient times to the present day.
'With its stunning images, this book convincingly demonstrates that the renaissance of earth architecture is no longer merely a pipe dream, but has become a tangible ecological reality – and this is very much thanks to the active militancy of its authors … it reveals an astonishing multitude of homes, architectural archetypes and cities built in the very earth that anchors them' - Jean-Louis Cohen, Sheldon HSolow Professor in the History of Architecture at New York University Institute of Fine Arts
'Offers a new way of thinking' - Aesthetica
'Fascinating ... a bold ecological manifesto' - Design Talks
'A beautiful, informative ode to the earth itself' - Financial Times
'Demonstrate[s] the expressive potential of an often overlooked resource' - House & Garden
'Dethier makes a powerful case that a re-evaluation of earth construction might provide a blueprint for the future as well as revealing much about our past … [He] challenges the received canon of architectural history and calls for a paradigm shift in how architects relate to materials and the planet. As we face the climate emergency, Dethier’s holistic politicisation of the earth beneath our feet is ground-breaking in all senses ' - Literary Review
