James Branch Cabell (1879-1958) was an escapist and fantasy novelist from the United States. Cabell was born into a wealthy Virginia family & attended the College of William and Mary, where he graduated in 1898 after a brief personal controversy. Cabell's debut tales were published in Harper's Monthly Magazine and The Saturday Evening Post, kicking off a busy decade in which his work appeared in both publications. Cabell would go on to publish fifty-two volumes over the next forty years, the most of which were novels and short story collections. H.L. Mencken was a friend, coworker, and inspiration for many writers, including Ellen Glasgow. James Branch Cabell is known as an iconoclastic pioneer of fantasy writing, with H.L. Mencken, Sinclair Lewis, and Theodore Dreiser.
