Bach: The Brandenburg Concertos by Malcolm Boyd
The Brandenburg Concertos represent a pinnacle in the history of the Baroque Concerto, as well as being among the most universally admired of all Bach's works. This fascinating new guide places the concertos in their historical context, investigates their sources, traces their origins and discusses the changing traditions of performance that have affected the way listeners have understood them since Bach's time. The works' rich instrumentarium is carefully described, and a substantial chapter considers each concerto individually, revealing those aspects of their style and structure that make this group of works a unique and towering landmark in the history of the genre. After a successful career in advertising and television, Malcolm Boyd was ordained as an Episcopal priest in 1955. When he said his prayers accompanied by some of America's best-known musicians, he was called the coffeehouse priest by Time Magazine in the 1960s. Boyd has a lengthy history of civil rights activism, beginning with a Freedom Ride in 1996. In Indianapolis, Colorado, Detroit, Washington, D.C., and Santa Monica, Calif., he served parishes and college chaplaincies. He currently lives in Los Angeles with his two-decade-long boyfriend, Mark Thompson, an novelist, editor, and therapist.
Boyd, a poet and writer-in-residence at the Cathedral Center of St. Louis, is the author of multiple publications. Paul is a priest in the Los Angeles Episcopal Diocese.
