It's a truism that love makes the world go round. Love is wonderful, blissful, transformative. But these stories remind us that it can follow a very different trajectory. In our desperate desire to mould it to our image, we misinterpret, manipulate, exploit and regulate. We commit our greatest follies, blunder into our worst mistakes and are left with heart-breaking regrets. Retreating to the ivory tower of intellect, we become reductive - categorising love as nothing more than a potpourri of neuromodulators. And if, under exceptional circumstances, we get to experience it as something numinous, something immanent, something woven into the very warp and weft of life? Well then, we simply don't believe.
