While still in high school, Jim Lucas (1944-1980) began photography for the Jackson Daily News. Lucas met and assisted film cameramen from CBS News while a student at Millsaps College during the summer of 1964, when the nation was focused on Mississippi and the search for three missing civil rights workers. Until 1968, he covered local marches, pickets, planning meetings, and bombs. He was voted Military Newsfilm Motion Picture Photographer of the Year in 1969 while serving in the Army Signal Corps in Vietnam. When he returned to Mississippi, he pursued freelance film work as well as feature film work.

At the time of his death, Jane Hearn was married to Jim Lucas. For a touring show and a website, jimlucasphotography.com, she archived, edited, and repaired his photos.
