Beneficence, Philanthropy and the Public Good by Ellen Frankel Paul

Throughout the Western world, there is increasing doubt that governments are capable of satisfying the manifold and varied needs of society. Can private philanthropy accomplish what governments cannot? The essays in this volume address a broad range of philosophical issues that emerge from an examination of philanthropy, especially as it is practised in the United States. What is the connection between philanthropy and such traditional virtues as beneficence and generosity? What role, if any, is appropriate for philanthropy in a democratic society? What are the ethical norms that should guide the actions of both the practitioners and the beneficiaries of philanthropy? Questions such as these provide the normative background against which the findings of social scientists concerning the extent and priorities of philanthropic activity ought to be interpreted.
