Beyond the Curtain by David Blair

Beyond the Curtain is a personal and reflective story of how Scripture Union took root in the former communist countries of Europe from the 1980s onwards. Europe was on the move following the dramatic changes in November 1989, with the fall of the Berlin Wall and the dismantling of the Iron Curtain. These events ushered in a new era of openness to the Gospel, as recounted through the stories of people who helped shape Christian work and witness in the new Europe.
David Blair, born in Scotland, has been involved with Scripture Union for over sixty years, first as a volunteer in Scotland and then, after moving to England, on the staff of Scripture Union from 1962 to 1998. From 1976 he headed up SU's schools ministry in England and Wales, before being appointed, in 1990, to develop SU's work in Eastern and Central Europe. He combined this role with the development and support of high schools ministry in Europe for IFES (International Fellowship of Evangelical Students). In retirement he continued to travel and encourage some of the new SU movements for a number of years. He sings in an Oxford choir, and he is involved as a volunteer with local dementia groups and in various local church activities in Oxford.
