The Bible by John Rogerson
This volume assumes a multi-disciplinary approach, covering not only the history of biblical lands and the people who lived in them, but also the political, social and economic forces that shaped the culture of the place and time. "The Bible" features maps and illustrations with supporting text; charts, tables and chronologies for quick reference to significant events and periods; special spreads that focus on biblical society and describe which historical sites can be visited by the traveller today; full-colour reconstructions which "illustrate" life as it really was then; and a complete glossary. Part 1 opens with a short overview of the Bible and chronicles the main stories, peoples and events in both the Old and New Testaments. Part 2 looks at the landscape of ancient Israel region by region, with particular emphasis on key sites such as Masada, Jericho and Jerusalem. This book is aimed specifically at younger readers, but it should also be a useful resource for older students and for adults seeking a refresher course on the history of the Bible.
J. W. Rogerson is Emeritus Professor of Biblical Studies at the University of Sheffield and a Canon Emeritus of Sheffield Cathedral. John Vincent is a past President of the Methodist Conference, and was the founder of the Urban Theology Unit in Sheffield, of which he is now Emeritus Director.
