The Blue Flower by Penelope Fitzgerald

Set in the small provincial and university towns between Leipzig and Berlin at the very end of the 18th century, this novel's central character is the great romantic philosopher Novalis. Fitzgerald won the Booker Prize in 1979 for "Offshore". She has also been shortlisted several times.

Penelope Fitzgerald was one of the most distinctive voices in British literature. The prize-winning author of nine novels, three biographies and one collection of short stories, she died in 2000.
