Bodies of Subversion by Margot Mifflin

In this provocative work, full of intriguing female characters from tattoo history, Margot Mifflin makes a persausive case for the tattooed women as an emblem of female self expression. Illustrated with over 200 photographs, this is the seminal and first book of its type to discuss and portray women and tattoos, which have traditionally been a male preserve.

Margot Mifflin is a journalist and author who focuses on women's issues, art, and current culture. She has written for a variety of publications, including the New York Times, the New Yorker, Entertainment Weekly, the Believer, and Salon.com. She is the author of Bodies of Subversion: A Hidden History of Women and Tattoo. Mifflin is an English professor at Lehman College of the City University of New York (CUNY) and the director of the Arts and Culture department at the Graduate School of Journalism at CUNY, where she also lectures.
