YEARS OF DEFEAT 1939 TO 1941

YEARS OF DEFEAT 1939 TO 1941 by Martin Farndale

This volume begins the story of the Royal Artillery in World War II, and covers the period from September 1939 to the end of 1941. The regiment was by no means fully prepared for war but by supreme effort managed to recruit and train the hundreds of thousands of men and women required. The guns available to them at the start dated mostly from World War I and the procedures to use them effectively in what proved to be a new kind of war were not yet fully understood. Nevertheless, the achievements of the Regiment in defeat as well as in victory, were extraordinary. From the first landings in France to final withdrawal in June 1940 - intervention in Norway, the defence of the homeland, especially against air attack, the victories over Italy in North and East Africa, German intervention in the former and British defeat in Greece and Crete - the Regiment fought with gallantry alongside its comrades in the Army, the Royal Navy and the Royal Air Force. The book contains much factual detail, and lists all regiments and many of the people involved. This is the Royal Artillery's own story of the first 28 months of the war, and its involvement in every aspect of it on land, sea and in the air.
