Bristol's Pauper Children by Shirley Hodgson
The story of the estimated 1500 orphaned and destitute Bristol children who were sent to Canada to start a new life with foster parents from the 1870s. Rather than finding loving families many of the children were forced to work on farms or as domestic servants. An estimated 60,000 Canadians are descendants of the pauper childrenShirley Hodgson was born in 1935 and her working life was devoted to the care and education of children across Bristol. She first trained as a nursery nurse and then as a primary school teacher. She worked in several Bristol schools including Victoria Park Junior School in Bedminster, where she was head teacher for ten years before retiring in 1992.
She was introduced to the story of the British Home Children who were sent to Canada from the 1860s during a lecture by Dr. Moira Martin from the University of the West of England. Little was known about Bristol's Pauper Children who were part of this exodus, so Shirley set about investigating what had happened to them and the role Bristol institutions and individuals played in the street children’s education and emigration. This book is the result of her painstaking research, which has taken her across the UK and Canada as well as closer to home in Bristol, where Shirley volunteers with a group of family historians at Bristol Archives, transcribing and indexing records.
Shirley is a strong advocate for the institutions that care for the city’s civic and community records. She’s also a member of the Friends of Bristol Museums, Galleries and Archives, where she sits on the Executive Committee and helps to raise funds for Bristol Museums Service.
