Inazo Nitobe (1862-1933) was born in Japan and started learning English at the age of nine. He studied in universities in Japan, the United States, and Germany, earning five doctorates in the process. Nitobe was a cultural ambassador, an educator, and one of the most well-known Japanese authors of his day.
