Si ricostruisce il contesto storico-politico e giuridico-normativo in cui, tra 1943 e 1946, emerse l'opzione di una consultazione popolare per sciogliere il dilemma istituzionale. Si muove dai numeri, ovvero da una rielaborazione statistica e da un'inedita rappresentazione dei risultati del 2-3 giugno 1946. Con l'ausilio delle nuove tecnologie e della cartografia dinamica si delineano i contorni di una nuova geografia delle preferenze per la Repubblica e la Monarchia. Emergono la presenza di un Nord monarchico e di un Sud repubblicano, le correlazioni col voto costituente e il rapporto tra centri e periferie. Arricchito da un ampio corredo di tabelle, grafici e cartogrammi - macro-aree, regioni, province, comuni -, il volume prefigura ulteriori analisi delle consultazioni popolari all'origine dell'Italia repubblicana.

Clara Tuite is Professor of English at the University of Melbourne, where she is also a Co-Director and Lead Researcher with the Research Unit in Enlightenment, Romanticism and Contemporary Culture. She is the author of Romantic Austen: Sexual Politics and the Literary Canon (Cambridge, 2002) and Lord Byron and Scandalous Celebrity (Cambridge, 2015), which was awarded the Elma Dangerfield Prize of the International Association of Byron Societies. In 2017, she was elected to the Australian Academy of the Humanities.
