Matthew Brown was born in London and attended the Royal College of Music Preparatory Division and then King's College London. He went on to get his Ph.D. at Cornell University's Department of Musicology. He was a junior fellow at Harvard University from 1983 to 1986. Since then, he has taught theory at Louisiana State University and musicology at the Eastman School of Music.

He has sat on the American Musicological Society's council and the Society for Music Theory's executive board. At the Eastman School of Music, he is currently an Associate Professor of Music Theory.
