The Castle of Otranto by Horace Walpole
Purporting to be based on a (fictitious) sixteenth-century manuscript containing a mediaeval story about spooky goings - on in an Italian castle, this story opens with the death of the heir of the castle of Otrantro, on both his wedding-day and his birthday, crushed by an immense helmet.
Horace Walpole (1717-1797) was the youngest son of Sir Robert Walpole, Britain's 'first prime minister.' Educated at Eton and King's College, Cambridge, he was an antiquary, an historian, a Member of Parliament, a novelist and a printer. He famously remodelled his house at Strawberry Hill in the Gothic style and in 1791 succeeded to the title of fourth Earl of Orford.
