Chesca and the Spirit of Grace by Lara O'brien

A story of love and land, of winning friendships and having the courage to believe in your dreams. 11-year-old Chesca O'Brien, Howth's greatest (and only) Trick Rider plans to ride Malley, the farm's wild stallion, and put on a show no one will forget - especially show jumping champion, Mary Murphy. But then her Ma gets sick and Da stops talking, which leaves the farmyard wide open to all kinds of problems. Inspired by Ireland's most famous Pirate Queen, Grace O'Malley, Chesca must take on the might of a developer, rally a town, and fight the fight of her life to save all she holds dear. An Irish tale of talking animals, a magical mountain and galloping sideways.
Lara O'Brien was born in Dublin and raised on the wild and wondrous hill of Howth, as in, Howth is Magic, a beautiful seaside town on the northeast coast of Ireland with cliff paths and moors of outstanding beauty. She grew up one of many children who were part of Howth Riding Stables, a barn for twenty-five horses, cows and a clever dog named Polly. It was an adventurous and innocent childhood. In the early 1990s the barn and land were sold with the promise of becoming a stud farm and was then quickly turned over to a developer. Planning permission was refused for 52 houses and since the economic downturn its future remains in the hands of a government agency. She now lives on the sister Island of Martha's Vineyard with her husband, four children and writing companion, Tukka Rex, a great golden, and talking dog.
