Horace Bushnell (1802-1876) was born in the Connecticut township of Litchfield, in the village of Bantam. He graduated from Yale in 1827 and worked as an Associate Editor of the New York Journal of Commerce from 1828 to 1829 before becoming a instructor at Yale in 1829. He began studying law there, but switched to Yale College's Theology Department in 1831, and was appointed pastor of the North Congregational Church in Hartford, Connecticut, in 1833. He remained pastor there until 1859, when he resigned due to chronic illness. Following that, he occasionally lectured and worked as an novelist until his death in Hartford.
