Climate Change & The Humanities 2016 by J Emil Morhardt
In 2011 Mike Hulme published an opinion piece, Meet the Humanities, in Nature Climate Change, one of the premier scientific journals dealing with climate change. He asserted that Although climate is inarguably changing society, social practices are also impacting on the climate. Nature and culture are deeply entangled, and researchers must examine how each is shaping the other. But they are largely failing to do so (Hulme 2011). This was likely the first time that many climate scientists had thought much about the humanities as relevant to what they were studying. This book sets out to rectify that, documenting what a broad selection of academics, journalists, artists, and others working in the humanities and social sciences have been writing about climate change recently. It consists of over 200 summaries of such works and provides a good introduction to the range of thinking about climate change addressed by non-scientists, and a good entry point to a growing literature.
The authors of this book are students at all five of the Claremont Colleges. The book is a work product of Biology 159: Natural Resources Management taught by Emil Morhardt in the Joint Science Department of Claremont McKenna, Pitzer, and Scripps Colleges. Each student picked a topic, did a full literature search, and selected ten papers written within the past year that exemplified the state of the science. Their task was to write journalistic summaries capturing the essence of the papers but eschewing technical terms to the extent possible-to become, in effect, science writers. The summaries were due weekly and were returned with editorial comments shortly thereafter. The chapters are compilations of the individual sum-maries with additional introductory and conclusionary material. The editor is Roberts Professor of Environmental Biology at Claremont McKenna, Pitzer, and Scripps colleges, and Director of The Roberts Environmental Center at Claremont McKenna College. He remembers how difficult it is to learn to write and appreciates the professionalism shown by these students.
