Cobbled Streets and Penny Sweets by Yvonne Young
Growing up so soon after the Second World War, it was also a time of great hardship and many families around Yvonne suffered poverty and neglect. And yet, people made the best of what little they had, as housewives competed to scrub their doorsteps clean and children turned derelict houses into playgrounds.
Yvonne Young was born in Newcastle-upon-Tyne in 1952, growing up in the West End. She still lives in the city and is a local historian and author who has written four books about the city and its people, and also works with local cultural organisations to promote the city's history.
