Cold War by Fidel Castro

Who won the Cold War? CN's astonishingly frank interview with Fidel Castro in which he makes some remarkable revelations. Far from being a proxy for Moscow, Castro tells CN that Cuba's support for liberation movements in Latin America and Africa was a constant source of disagreement. If a Soviet Cuban master plan had really existed we would have won the Cold War he says.

The Cuban leader's reflections on talk about preemptive nuclear strikes during the 1962 Missile Crisis are frighteningly familiar today.

To endure the global struggle between the superpowers is bad. To live under the total hegemony of one of them is worse.--Fidel Castro

Fidel Castro led a guerrilla movement in Cuba that overthrew the Batista dictatorship in 1959. Since then, the Cuban president has been the nemesis of ten U.S. administrations. He stepped down in 2007 but has regularly expressed his views on world events and political personalities in his famous reflections. Eliades Acosta is a professor of philosophy in Santiago and the director of the Jose Marti National Library of Cuba. He founded the Santiago Cultural Center, a gathering place for Cuban intellectuals. He has toured the United States on several occasions, notably visiting the University of California (Berkeley).
