The Colossus of Rhodes by Caroline Lawrence

Spring AD 80. The sailing season has begun. Lupus decides to see if his mother is still alive and to follow his uncle's dying wish. The friends sail to the island of Rhodes, site of one of the seven wonders of the ancient world ...and base of a criminal mastermind!
(The) Roman Mysteries series deserves its devoted followingThe Colossus of Rhodes takes our quartet of multicultural detectives out of the city and across the sea towards Greece, into danger at the hands of a brutal slave-dealer. Though its dialogue lacks subtlety, it compensates with a lively, detailed knowledge of classical history The Times 11th June 'The action is set against a detailed background of Roman classical history. Although the settings and cultures of the times are accurately portrayed the wit and interaction between the diverse group of friends is something that a contemporary child can relate to... the author brings history and adventure alive in a realistic way in this enjoyable series.' -- Val Loh Historical Novels Review
Caroline Lawrence is American. She won a scholarship to Cambridge to read Classical Archaeology, then did a degree in Hebrew and Jewish Studies at University College, London.
