Salvador Sanchez Ceren, better known by his nom de guerre Comandante Leonel Gonzalez, was elected El Salvador's vice president for the FMLN (Frente Farabundo Marti de Liberacion Nacional) in the closely-contested March 2009 elections.

Leonel Gonzalez was a founding member of the FMLN as a key leader of the iberation front formed in 1980, inspired by the Sandinista victory in Nicaragua in 1979. He played a leading role in the peace negotiations that led to the 1992 accords. He heads the FMLN parliamentary caucus and was elected Vice-President in March 2009.
