Rise B.Axelrod is Emeritus McSweeney Professor of Rhetoric and Teaching Excellence at the University of California, Riverside, where she also served as the director of English Composition. She was previously a professor of English at California State University, San Bernardino; director of the University of Colorado, Boulder's College Expository Department; and assistant director of the University of California, San Diego's Third College (now Thurgood Marshall College) Composition Program. She co-wrote the book with Charles R. Cooper, author of the best-selling The St. Martin's Guide to Writing, The Short Guide to Writing, and Reading Critically, Writing Well are all excellent resources for writers.

Charles R. Cooper is a University of California, San Diego, emeritus professor. He was the coordinator of the University of California, San Diego's Third College (now Thurgood Marshall College) Composition Program and co-director of the San Diego Writing Project, one of the National Writing Project Centers. He helped to establish California's first statewide writing assessment (1986-1991) and advised the National Assessment of Educational Progress Writing (1973-1981). He taught at the University of California, Riverside, Buffalo State University, and the University of California, San Diego.

He co-edited Assessing Writing and Research on Composing: Points of Departure with Lee Odell, and he and Rise Axelrod co-authored the best-selling textbook The St. Martin's Guide to Writing, The Short Guide to Writing, and Reading Critically, Writing Well are all excellent resources for writers.
