He used to play drums and trumpet on the side in England when he was a kid. He now performs on the E-flat and C soprano saxophones, as well as the drums. He was the art director/editor of Coda Magazine from 1963 to 2001.

His many recordings are all analog, although two of them (Visitation with Joe McPhee and Rastafari with Leo Smith) are about to be republished on CD by Boxholder. Learning New Tricks, a new album of duets with guitarist Tony Wilson, was recently released. He has lived on Hornby Island since 1989.
