Crandalls' Castle by Betty Ren Wright

In alternating chapters, two girls narrate the story of the haunted mansion that the Crandall's have purchased to turn into a bed and breakfast. Twelve-year-old Charlie is adjusting to life with a new step-father when her Uncle Will buys the house and enlists her help in cleaning it. Fourteen-year-old, orphaned Sophia has recently come to live with Uncle Will's family and is afraid her new family will discover her secret - she knows things before they happen. Though their relationship is rocky, both girls are fearful about what's going on at the mansion, and the suspense and tension between them and in the house builds to a chilling climax.
Betty Ren Wright (1927-2013) was the distinguished author of many award-winning books for young readers, including Christina's Ghost. In addition to her middle-grade mysteries, Wright also penned more than thirty-five picture books for children, including The Blizzard, which appeared on state award master lists and was a Bank Street Best Children's Book of the Year. In 2006 she was honored as a Notable Wisconsin Children's Author by the Wisconsin Library Association.
