J. G. Ballard was born in 1930 in Shanghai, where his father was a businessman. After internment in a civilian prison camp, his family returned to England after the Second World War. His novels include Empire of the Sun, High-Rise, Cocaine Nights and Super-Cannes. His autobiography Miracles of Life was published in 2008 to much acclaim. He died in 2009.
Chris Beckett is an archivist at the British Library. He catalogued the papers of J.G. Ballard in 2010–11.
