H.R.ROOKMAAKER (1922-1977) was born in the Dutch East Indies and grew up there. He was incarcerated as a young man in wartime Holland for disseminating anti-Nazi flyers, and during that period he converted to Christianity. Francis Schaeffer and I formed a lifelong friendship in 1948. Rookmaaker's PhD thesis on Gauguin was published in 1959, and he was appointed to the Chair of Art History at the Free University of Amsterdam in 1965. In addition to being a jazz critic, Rookmaaker was well-known.
