He is the author of eight books, including The Warrior's Path: Reflections Along an Ancient Route and George Garrett: A Biography, as well as Confederado: A Novel of the Americas. He has won numerous awards and fellowships, including the Bangladesh International Literary Award and the Emma Bell Miles Award in the Essay.
