This book, written by a survivor, looks at the situation of Black women and incest, focusing on the costs of that survival and the strengths which sustain it. This is the culmination of Melba Wilson's long-held desire to write about an experience which has affected her and countless other women and children. She writes from the conviction that the taboo against speaking out must be broken, whilst debunking the myth that incest is the norm in Black communities.
