Dante And Phlosophy by Etienne Gilson
The object of this work is to define Dante's attitude or, if need be, his successive attitudes towards philosophy. It is therefore a question of ascertaining the character, function and place which Dante assigned to this branch of learning among the activities of man. My purpose has not been to single out, classify and list Dante's numerous philosophical ideas, still less to look for their sources or to decide what doctrinal influences determined the evolution of his thought.Etienne Gilson was born in the city of Paris in the year 1884. In 1921, he was appointed Professor of Medieval Philosophy at the Sorbonne, and from 1932 until 1951, he held a similar position at the College of France. He was a member of the University of Toronto's Institute of Mediaeval Studies from 1929 until his death.
