A Decapitated Coffee Please by Malaprop
Have you heard about the confirmed septic? Or the doctor's hypocritical oath? Why do we find malapropisms so funny? One reason is they make us feel so superior - after all, we wouldn't make the silly verbal blunders poor Mrs Malaprop does - or would we? Many malapropisms are authentic, and reality has the uncanny knack of being a lot funnier than anything fiction can contrive. They illustrate the extraordinary richness of language, revealing hidden connections between words and concepts. Keep your ears open and you will hear many more of them because Mrs Malaprop is living near you!
Des MacHale was born in Castlebar, County Mayo in 1946. He is Associate Professor of Mathematics at University College Cork. He lives in Cork with his wife and five children. Humour and humorous quotations are one of Des' passions. He had his own series, The Comedians, on RTE Radio One from 1977 to 1989 and is a regular contributor to all forms of media on both mathematics and humour. He has had over thirty humour books published, including the hugely successful series of 'Wit' books.
