John Rutter was born on April 10th, 1796, in Bristol, England, the youngest of seven children. He married the daughter of a Quaker draper in July 1818. In the same year, he produced his first pamphlet, which summarized the history of a rural area south of Shaftesbury. The outcome of two excursions Rutter took in 1828, Delineations of the North Western Division of the County of Somerset was first published in 1829.
