Designing Paradise by Don Hibbard

Brings us the story of the Hawaiian resort, from its origins as humble thatched taverns housing transient whalers to the elaborately cultivated luxury resort hotels of today. This book examines the motivations that shaped their development, including the critical role that advances in airplane technology, and statehood.
Don Hibbard served as an architectural historian and director for Hawaii's state historic preservation office for twenty-four years. He is the author of The Role of Rock, a study of popular music as a reflection of youth culture, and The View from Diamond Head, which traced the development of Waikiki from ancient Hawaiian times to the present. Now a freelance researcher, writer, and heritage consultant, he continues to nurture his broad ranging interests in Hawaii's architecture and material culture. He lives with his wife and two children in Kaneohe.
