The Devils of Loudun by Aldous Huxley
This is a case study of mass hysteria that has many parallels in modern society. It began as a practical joke in a small Ursuline convent in central France in the 1620s, throve on malice and female fantasies, involved Cardinal Richelieu and culminated in the murder of the local priest.
Aldous Huxley, who was born in 1894 and who died in 1963, was one of the great polymaths of the twentieth century. He was a prolific novelist and biographer.
