Dickens and the Grotesque (Routledge Revivals) by Michael Hollington

First published in 1984, this title examines the development of a special rhetoric in Dickens’ work, which, by using grotesque effects, challenged the complacency of his middle-class Victorian readers. The study begins by exploring definitions of the grotesque and moves on to look at three key aspects that particularly impacted on Dickens’ imagination: popular theatre (especially pantomime), caricature, and the tradition of the Gothic novel. Michael Hollington traces the development of Dickens’ application of the grotesque from his early work to his late novels, showing how its use becomes more subtle. Hollington’s title greatly enhances our appreciation of Dickens’ technique, showing the skill with which he used the grotesque to undermine stereotyped responses and encourage his readership to challenge their context.
Michael Hollington was for many years Professor of English at the University of New South Wales in Sydney, Australia, and has also taught extensively in France, England and elsewhere. He has been a Dickens enthusiast since childhood, has published many books and articles on his favourite author (including Dickens and the Grotesque and studies of David Copperfield and Great Expectations), and edited the four volume anthology of Dickens criticism in the Critical Assessments series. He is currently editing the two volume Reception of Charles Dickens in Europe. Francesca Orestano is Associate Professor of English Literature at the State University of Milan. She works on the connections between literature and aesthetics, the picturesque and visual culture, modernism, children's literature, landscape gardening, and the gothic. Her recent publications include essays on Dickens and the magic lantern, Ruskin, Jakob Burckhardt, Virginia Woolf, and an edited book, Strange Sisters: Literature and Aesthetics in the Nineteenth Century (Peter Lang, 2009).
