Discovery Road by T Garratt

The inspiring story of the first people to ride mountain bikes across the vast deserts of Australia, the dangerous bushlands of Africa, and the mountains of South America Fed up and disillusioned with corporate life, Andy persuaded Tim to leave his job and cycle around the world-convinced there could be more to life. Their goal was to become the first people to ride mountain bikes unsupported across the three southern continents and, in doing so, to raise money for the charity Intermediate Technology. This is a fast-moving tale of self-discovery, full of adventure, conflict, humor, danger, and a multitude of colorful characters. Much more than a travelogue, it proves ordinary people can chase great dreams.
'I know little about bicycles, but to attempt to pedal fifteen thousand kilometres without back-up, through some of the most demanding terrain on earth, is clearly no mean undertaking' Sir Ranulph Fiennes 'Its power comes from the excellence of writing.' The Independent 'Truly inspirational reading...10/10.' Cycling Plus Magazine
Andy and Tim met while travelling in Asia, Andy a petroleum executive and Tim a teacher of English and PE. They travelled together before returning to their respective lives. A couple of years down the line both were disillusioned and discontented in their lives but needed more than another aimless backpacking trip. Through IT they found a way to realise their dream while doing something incredibly important and constructive, raising over GBP35,000 for the charity.
