Drawing the Clothed Figure by Barbara Bradley

A complete course in drawing the clothed figure accurately, designed for all skill levels. Bradley, herself an illustrator, shares her techniques for translating a 3D form onto a 2D surface, starting with how to draw differently in varying situations (from a model; in sketchbooks; in the studio) and on drawing basics (proportion, perspective and value). She details the drawing of folds and drapery, including lines and forms that wrap around the body (such as the shirt sleeve around the arm), overlapping forms, rhythm, continuity, stretch and compression. Each is explained fully and illustrated clearly. Next, she helps the reader translate these folds into clothing on people, then gives more general instruction for bringing the figure together, such as designing the figure, drawing heads, hands and feet, drawing children, expressing emotion through face and gesture, and ageing the face and body.
Barbara Bradley is an award winning illustrator, and was the director of illustration for 25 years at the Academy of Art College in San Francisco. She is a consultant at the Academy of Art and teaches her favourite subjects: drawing expressive people and characters in clothing and drawing children. She has taught drawing workshops in London and at the Disney Animation Studio in Burbank, California. Her work appears in the Society of Illustrators Museum of American Illustration and the Permanent Collection of the US Air Force among other places. Barbara lives in Berkeley, California.
