Many book covers and drawings were among his impressive and diverse oeuvre. He also wrote Rimbaud and Marquis de Sade studies. He was a member of Devětsil and served as the director of the Liberated Theater, the group's theatre department, from 1928 to 1929. He was a founder member of Czechoslovakia's Surrealist Group.
